New Releases

White WardFalse Light | Debemur Morti Productions | Black Metal | Ukraine (Odessa)

From Brandon Nurick’s review:

With their third album, False Light, the Odessa-based troupe expand on their blackened foundation, allowing a fresh round of influences to reinforce the beams of blackgaze and noir they’ve built their sound upon.

EsoctrilihumConsecration of the Spiritüs Flesh | I, Voidhanger Records | Black Metal | France

More extremely intricate and bizarre black/death from this one-man powerhouse project — the sheer insanity on display helps keep Esoctrilihum’s aggressive release cadence from feeling too routine.

InexorumEquinox Vigil | Gilead Media | Melodic Black + Death Metal | United States (Minneapolis, MN)

From Colin Williams’s full album premiere:

Equinox Vigil is a restless, autumnal record that benefits from Inexorum’s most richly layered melodies and cleanest production to date.

ConsecrationCinis | Redefining Darkness Records | Death + Doom Metal | United Kingdom

A heightened sense of tragic melody elevates this rotting death-doom release, which can root around in the sewers with the best of them while still delivering some traditionally-inspired doom metal mood.

Horns & HoovesI am the Skel Messiah | Invictus Productions | Black Metal | United States (Brooklyn, NY)

From Jon Rosenthal’s track premiere of “Baphomet in Steel”:

Filled with raunchy sex act references (this might be the only time we ever cover anything which mentions “bussy” in a serious, conceptual manner) and anti-Christian messages, it’s Horns & Hooves’ brand of disgusting, riff-oriented black metal which hearkens back to black metal’s edgier salad days, when being ridiculous was the norm as a young genre found its footing.

Oblivion CastleSorcière | Independent | Black Metal + Doom + Ambient | Mexico

Elegant synthesizers adorn this dour, humid black metal release, with ambient interludes conjuring up a miasma that floods the mossy stonework.

DessicationCold Death Earth | Transilvanian Tapes | Black + Doom Metal | United States

Dessication’s debut album is a vast soundscape of black and doom metal, but the way that it traverses enormous swaths of emotions using these genres also ventures into post-metal territory.

Chevallier SkrogDethrone de Imperial Bloodline | Pant Y Meddygon | Black Metal | Czechia

Crude, punky black metal that revels in its impropriety. Beware, elite: Chevallier Skrog is coming for your silverware.
