Pharmafabrik - Fabriksampler V2

by Cosmo Lee

Pharmafabrik has been putting out challenging, interesting sounds. After an initial Fabriksampler, downloadable for free here, the Slovenian label returns with another compilation. V2 begins and ends with Napalm Death offshoots: Justin Broadrick and Mick Harris in their Final and Lull guises, respectively. Final’s “4am Internal” evokes Burzum’s ambient side with more balls and better gear, while Lull’s “The Gulley” isn’t much of anything. In between are marquee names in dark ambient/drone/experimental noise, like Sunao Inami and Henrik “Nordvargr” Björkk, and more obscure acts.

The assemblage is rich and varied. WoO’s “Life Bloom” is digital and grainy before blooming into six-string coruscation. The bleeps of Go Tsushima’s “Mu” recall old Warp releases. Cherry Blues Project submerges clip-clopping footsteps in industrial tension. (The Argentinian act is a wonderful discovery; more sounds and album downloads are available at its MySpace). Left Eye Dominant sends breakbeat fragments skittering with delay, while Nordvargr refutes the assertion that “in space, no one can hear you scream,” charring a vast expanse of drones with snatches of vocals. V2 is edited so its tracks flow seamlessly into each other. One can practically hear genre barriers falling, as sound rushes in to fill the gaps.
