ZU93 Heralds the Coming of the Mirror Emperor

The Mirror Emperor has awoken.

Learning of a collaboration between vocalist and poet David Tibet’s brainchild Current 93 and Italian jazz-inflicted noise-rock trio Zu came as a surprise to most. Yes, Tibet’s own legendary project has been no stranger to volume — even going so far as to collaborate with Andrew W.K. — but a collaboration with Zu opens new doors. Or so it was thought. Listen to an exclusive premiere of ZU93‘s Mirror Emperor below.

A longtime fan of Tibet’s fragile and abstract neofolk himself, Zu’s Massimo Pupillo leads his band down from their cataclysmic peaks to meet the master in his Coptic Temple. Weaving through the strange mountain paths of sound — alinear and abstract music and percussively melodic texture — Tibet meditates on the arrival of the Mirror Emperor, the reflection, through expressionistic vocal incantations in his cloister.

However bizarre, the adventure of this album is one of change. The art of the collaboration’s three paths (absorption, parallelism, and mashing) lean farther away from totality and in favor of Zu “becoming” Tibet’s backing band. In classic “Current 93 fashion,” Pupillo and company anoint the Temple of the Coptic Cat with beautiful sound tapestries and endlessness. From deep within isolation, the storybook Tibet whispers and sneers of the coming — the Mirror Emperor is near. The Mirror Emperor will awake. With David Tibet at the helm, each moment is pivotal.
