Maruta sound exactly like how I want technical death metal to sound – big but raw. They are usually called grindcore, but their 2008 debut In Narcosis had technical moments. Guitarist Eduardo Borja was clearly capable of more. Now with Maruta’s addition of a bassist, Borja has let loose some serious riffage. Some parts are technical, some are doomy, and some just flat-out grind. The way Borja digs into his strings yields caustic hooks everywhere. “Death/grind” usually means “grindcore songs that last too long”, but this is death/grind par excellence.
Forward into Regression comes out a month from today, March 8, on Willowtip. Power It Up will release a gatefold LP version. You can hear two more songs from the CD and pre-order it here.
