Whores. - "Baby Teeth" (Song Premiere)

whores

You may already be familiar with Atlanta noise trio Whores. from their pair of excellent EPs, 2013’s Clean and especially 2011’s masterful Ruiner. If not, please aquaint yourself with those records in order to better understand how much I’ve anticipated the band’s upcoming debut, Gold. The band strikes a middle ground between Eyehategod-ish sludge brutalism and snarky Melvins noise rock brutalism, to create, yes, loud and dissonant brutalism.

What separates Whores., though, besides their problematic-but-I’ll-take-it name, is that they never sacrifice solid rock song structures or memorable guitar licks when striving to bludgeon their listeners to death, which is more than I can say for pretty much every noise rock band since The Jesus Lizard. Strip away the bulldozer distortion and Whores. more-or-less write garage rock songs about why everyday life sort-of sucks. Which means, like the aforementioned Melvins at their best, Whores. are secretly a dad-rock band. As evidence, sample their new song “Baby Teeth” below.

Indicative of Gold as a whole, the song chugs along at a moderate pace, alternating blasts of guitar with room for Christian Lemach’s vocals. It’s not that different from .38 Special except it sort of sounds like everyone involved is dying from their krokodil habit, listener included.

Gold is out 10.28 on eOne music. Pre-order it here. Follow Whores. on Facebook.
