Upcoming metal releases: October 2010

Even in October, pressing plants are still disgorging face-melting metal like it’s wartime. (Oh, wait, it’s always wartime.) There are duds, to be sure. In fact, quality control seems to have gone out the window. Must use up Earth’s paper and petroleum resources for CDs and vinyl! (See Slayer’s 10-album, 11-disc vinyl box set.)

But some weapons are indeed military-grade. Below are candidates for this month’s stockpile. For the whole list, see here. Use the Agenda view on the top right, and click on entries to expand and collapse them.

The new Forbidden is in my headphones right now, and, wow, is it great. Hail of Bullets’ new album is streaming here until next Monday (10/11). Sanford Parker’s production on the new Krieg record is fantastic. Intronaut’s new record has been in heavy rotation for me; this week they go out for a month supporting Helmet (dates here). Wolvserpent (formerly Pussygutt) also just started a month-long run; see dates and stream their new record here.

SHOULD BE AT LEAST INTERESTING

The Crown have a new album?! The available samples of Cough’s new record (“Crooked Spine” and “Crippled Wizard”) move them out of the “Eyehategod clone” category. The buzz is hot for Withered’s new record, but the available samples (“Extinguished with the Weary” and “The Progenitor’s Grasp”) haven’t convinced me yet. The Wretched End is Samoth’s new band. The most intriguing act for me this month is Johnny Lokke. I have no idea who he is, but he reminds me of Ripper Owens in a good way. You can hear some of his work below.

Arson Anthem – Insecurity Notoriety (10/12)
Cough – Ritual Abuse (10/26)
The Crown – Doomsday King (10/12)
Kylesa – Spiral Shadow (10/26)
Johnny Lokke – Promises and Lies (10/19)
Winterfylleth – The Mercian Sphere (10/26)
Withered – Dualitas (10/26)
Woe – Quietly, Undramatically (10/12)
The Wretched End – Ominous (10/26)

MORBIDLY CURIOUS

Just look at it. (See above.)
