a2324660184_16

Here are the new metal releases for the weeks of July 29, 2018 – August 4, 2018. Release dates are formatted according to proposed North American scheduling, if available. Expect to see the bulk of these records on shelves or distros on the coming Fridays unless otherwise noted or if labels and artists get impatient. Blurbs and designations are based on whether or not I have a lot to say about it.

See something we missed? Goofs? Let us know in the comments. Plus, as always, feel free to post your own shopping lists. Happy digging.

As a little bit of a challenge, include your own opinion about anything you want to add. Make me want to listen to it!

Please note: this is a review column and is not speculative. Any announced albums without preview material will not be covered. Additionally, any surprise releases which are uploaded or released after this column is published will be excluded.

ANTICIPATED RELEASES

Until Death Overtakes Me – Missing | Dusktone | Ambient Funeral Doom Metal | Belgium
It’s been a black metal summer, so maybe it’s time to slow things down… way, way down. Multi-instrumentalist and prolific songwriter Stijn van Cauter only knows slow, and Until Death Overtakes Me is the embodiment of slowness. Effortlessly melding ambient music and crushing, timpani-driven funeral doom, Until Death Overtakes Me casts a dark shadow on this warm summer.

OF NOTE

Void Rot – Consumed By Oblivion | Everlasting Spew/Sentient Ruin Laboratories | Death/Doom Metal | United States
In the wake of bands like Spectral Voice re-popularizing the more conservative death/doom sound, we are left with a cornucopia of bands who… kind of sound like them. It isn’t the worst thing in the world, as Void Rot’s brand of plodding death slop is enjoyable and horrific in its own right, but I’d love to see different bands add some sort of unique identity to what they play. Don’t sound like the band you like, sound like you.

Soreption – Monument of the End | Sumerian Records | Technical Death Metal | Sweden
Soreption’s latest take on the oftentimes gluttonous subgenre of tech-death relishes (and succeeds) in both its leanness and meanness. With fantastical razor-sharp technicality, Monument of the End eviscerates soundalikes with total, pure riffage. Certainly, endemic to the style, guitars lead the way — Soreption offer balance, though, with drumming and bass whose respective edges are equally as honed. Also endemic to this style, production matters, and Soreption again nail the raw/polished balance. It’s all very top-shelf feeling, which is a great feeling when you’re being eviscerated by such savage instrumentation. Similar bands, maybe like Archspire, still succeed in their own ways; Soreption, however, seems to check off all the requisite boxes, effortlessly too boot. Stay tuned for our interview later this week with band frontman Fredrik Söderberg.

OTHER RELEASES

Into Eternity – The Sirens | Independent | Progressive/Melodic Death Metal | Canada
I’ll be honest, I haven’t really listened to Into Eternity since The Scattering of Ashes, so this was intended to be somewhat of a walk down memory lane. The Sirens pretty much sounds like what I remember — goofy and shreddy fun — but I do wish vocalist Amanda Kiernan’s harsh vocals were a little stronger.
