Upcoming Metal Releases: 7/27/2014 – 8/2/2014

Apologies if this is too ‘inside baseball’ (inside blerghbork?), but one of the biggest time sinks of Upcoming Metal Releases is the inevitable debate over whether a band should make the cut. Don’t get me wrong, what ended up hitting this list is great: the highly anticipated Panopticon was well worth the wait, Coprocephalic‘s slams seemed to get even crazier, and Void Ritual more than earned their Stream in the Northern Sky nod. It’s a ‘tweener week, but no one should be complaining.

. . . except maybe Russia’s Nakka. Why? They’re, uh, not here.

DEBATE TIME!

Nakka play pretty standard modern death metal. Sure, the grunts and growls emanating from Gella Bezumenko are a step above the norm, but everything else ticks the typical boxes. They groove with a deathcore kind of swing, they have a polished tone, they smash faces with hammers, and on and on. You’ve heard it. A lot. So, even though it’s fun, it wasn’t enough to put them over the top. That said, jeeze, their videos:

Huh. GIF makers, you’re welcome. And congratulations Nakka. In a rare turn, your accompanying visuals snagged you some Upcoming Metal Releases real estate. Электродофреник is out today.

See something we missed? Goofs? Let us know in the comments. Plus, as always, feel free to post your own shopping lists. Happy digging.

New metal releases for the week of 7/27/2014 – 8/2/2014. Release dates are formatted according to proposed North American scheduling, if available. Expect to see the bulk of these records on shelves or distros on Tuesday unless otherwise noted. Blurbs and designations are based on available promotional material and perceived buzz.

Anticipated Releases:

Panopticon – Roads to the North | Bindrune Recordings | Black metal, folk metal
Appalachian folk meets atmospheric black metal in another boundary pushing performance from Austin Lunn. Colin Marston provides a suitably thick production.

Of Note:

Cemetery Fog – Towards the Gates | Iron Bonehead Productions | Blackened death/doom
A Finnish duo dragging early Peaceville classics through filth. Find older material here.

Coprocephalic – The Oath of Relinquishment | Lacerated Enemy Records | Death metal
Following up their 2014 EP, this international (USA plus Taiwan) outfit continues to experiment with gurgling brutal death.

Eastern Front – Descent into Genocide | Candlelight Records | Black metal
A battle-obsessed onslaught of standard second-wave blasts.

Gnosis of the Witch – Dauðr Burðr Þrysvar | Iron Bonehead Productions | Black metal
Second EP of the year from this mysterious US duo going kvlt with an off-kilter clatter.

Gorgasm – Destined To Violate | New Standard Elite | Death metal
In their 20th year, the brutal deathers speed pick their way through a new set of perversions.

Heidra – Awaiting Dawn | Mighty Music | Folk metal, viking metal
These Danes offer up sturdy Scandinavian tales.

Invidiosus – Malignant Universe | Tridroid Records | Death metal
A death metal two-piece combating clicky production with a warm sound. Has connections to Dying Fetus and Anal Blast.

Krigblåst – Power Till Demise | Moshpit Tragedy | Hardcore, crust
Members of Phobia, Leftover Crack, and D.R.I. motör through succinct punk blasts. Includes a “Transilvanian Hunger” cover.

Krigsgrav – The Carrion Fields | Naturmacht Productions | Black metal
An anthemic and melodic take on atmospheric black metal.

Oath – Saatanan Myrsky Yllä Pyhän Maan | Immortal Frost Productions | Black metal
Colors the Finnish black metal template with celestial swirls.

Oubliette – Apparitions | The Artisan Era | Black metal
Pairs well with Krigsgrav, though Oubliette go bigger with their production.

Paths / Old GravesOld Graves / Paths | No Sleep Till Megiddo Records | Black metal
Two solo Canadians trade trems. Old Graves does foggy folkiness. Paths expands his mind with psych.

Those Who Bring The Torture – Piling Up | Selfmadegod Records | Death metal
BFFs Rogga Johansson and Brynjar Helgetun rope in mate Dennis Blomberg and cut together another collaboration. Surprise: it’s heavy death metal.

Unhuman Disease / SarkristaThose Who Preach Perdition | Immortal Frost Productions | Black metal
United by rawness. Oklahoma’s one-man band Unhuman Disease does traditional evil. Germany’s Sarkrista are slightly cleaner, but no less of a trem blizzard.

Void Ritual – Holodomor | Tridroid Records | Black metal
Bruising black metal with a death metal heaviness.

Voodoo Gods – Anticipation for Blood Leveled in Darkness | Saturnal Records | Death metal
