Deicide thumb

Upcoming Metal Releases: 11/24/2013 - 11/30/2013

While Americans start to settle into their La-Z-Boys in preparation for the traditional tryptophan-induced hibernation through a Lions loss, the metal world keeps on hatching eggs. This week’s Anticipated section features a release for every age, be it Artillery, Profanatica, and Deicide‘s demonstration of their decidedly impressive durability, or Ævangelist, Celeste, and Lumbar‘s neat new tricks. For some, Avatarium‘s long-awaited Stateside availability will be a true reason to give thanks.

On the other side, Of Note is stuffed with winners. Fleshpress and The Disease Concept provide expert iterations of the slow n’ low, while Hell and Shadow Host treat their strings like the pegs on a powered-up Wheel of Fortune. Elsewhere, Malthusian‘s intense introduction is too good and too fully formed to leave off despite its demo distinction, and Glittertind rock folk metal back awake. If you’ve got a four-day weekend coming up, clicking through these choices to find a new best friend isn’t a terrible way to spend it. Or, you might be too busy contemplating how your hometown got so weird. Either way, enjoy your holiday.

Corrections: Couldn’t find the Code and Ephel Duath last week? You weren’t alone, as it appears the release dates shifted. Both records should be available this week. Also, a past highlight, Year of No Light, is receiving a release via Debemur Morti Productions. You can play the post-metal pounder here.

See something we missed? Goofs? Let us know in the comments. Plus, as always, feel free to post your own shopping lists. Happy digging.

New metal releases for the week of 11/24/2013 — 11/30/2013. Release dates are formatted according to proposed North American scheduling, if available. Expect to see the bulk of these records on shelves or distros on Tuesday unless otherwise noted. Blurbs and designations are based on available promotional material and perceived buzz.

Anticipated Releases:

Ævangelist – Omen Ex Simulacra | Debemur Morti Productions | Black metal, death metal
Matron Thorn (Benighted in Sodom) and vocalist Ascaris give cavern-y death metal the industrial oil smear familiar to fans of Debemur Morti’s other horrors. Available on 11/29/2013.

Artillery – Legions | Metal Blade Records | Thrash
Ripe‘s Michael Bastholm Dahl debuts behind the mic for Denmark’s 30-year-old thrash institution.

Avatarium – Avatarium | Nuclear Blast | Doom
The prolific Leif Edling (Candlemass, Krux) rounds up some of his usual subjects to build an Epicus nest for Jennie-Ann Smith’s charismatic reads.

Celeste – Animale(s) | Denovali Records | Blackened hardcore
Former members of Mihai Edrisch make more characteristically dense ‘core, weaving strands of black metal’s timbres and post-_______’s propulsion. Stream the album here.

Deicide – In the Minds of Evil | Century Media Records | Death metal
Glen Benton double-tracks the order “Steady as Satan goes!” to spur his crew on to chip away at another hunk of Floridian riffing.

Lumbar – The First And Last Days Of Unwelcome | Southern Lord Recordings | Sludge
This audio portrait of Aaron Edge’s MS affliction is voiced by Tad Doyle (TAD, Brothers of the Sonic Cloth) and Mike Scheidt (YOB, VHOL).

Profanatica – Thy Kingdom Cum | Hells Headbangers | Black metal
Paul Ledney, an O.G. co-founder of Incantation, and John Gelso (The Royal Arch Blaspheme) batter through another trem-skeeting blasphemy bukkake.

Of Note:

A Winter Lost – Die l‰ngste Nacht | Sun & Moon Records | Black metal
The group gets away with their gimmick (Canadians singing in German) by going all out with the vocals. The epitome of a second-wave back-scratcher.

Blood Mortized – The Demon, the Angel, the Disease | F.D.A. Rekotz | Death metal
F.D.A. Rekotz‘s keepers open the hive for another OSDM Swedish swarm, this time from bumblebees of Just Before Dawn and ex-Amon Amarth.

Circle – Incarnation | Ektro Records | Death metal
Yeah, that Circle. Yeah, that death metal. While the full-timers vacation with Falcon‘s every-man AOR, they’ve allowed their Stench of Decay/Speedtrap mates to house-sit. The result is a thick OSDM chug. Unexpected, yet absolutely expected as soon as the first riff rings out. (Note: A few different release dates are floating around, so we’ll refresh you if this gets shoved.)

The Disease Concept – Your Destroyer | Totem Cat Records | Sludge
This C-Town superpower features the strums of Dave Szulkin (Blood Farmers) along with fellas from Fistula and Solace among others. Skilled sludge with hooky highs.

Eye of Solitude – Canto III | Kaotoxin Records | Death/doom
These London doomers record faster than their pallbearer pace might suggest (third album in three years), but the quality is there for those who enjoy their eulogies gurgled and crooned.

Fleshpress – Tearing Skyholes | Kult of Nihilow | Doom, sludge
Surprise Bandcamp drop from one of Finland’s finest. Doom is the chassis, though it doesn’t limit their style spelunking. Mikko Aspa (Deathspell Omega) provides the pulse.

Glittertind – Djevelsvart | Indie Records | Folk metal
Though the flame of folk metal has been snuffed by tiresome tropes, Glittertind burns bright by rock n’ rolling.

Hecate Enthroned – Virulent Rapture | Crank Music Group | Black metal
After a nearly decade-long gap between albums, the UK melo-blasters get heftier on full-length number five.

Hell – Curse and Chapter | Nuclear Blast | Heavy metal
The revived NWOBHM outfit proves their 2011 LP debut wasn’t a fluke with another shredder of Angel Witch-ian bombast. Andy Sneap (Sabbat) is one half of the six-string attack.

Incandescence – Abstractionnisme | Deathbound Records | Black metal
This Canadian two piece nimbly riffs through sturdy black metal standbys. Includes a player from Beyond Creation and Chthe’ilist.

Kuolemanlaakso – Musta aurinko nousee | Svart Records | Death/doom
An EP of not-as-gothy downers with the singer of Swallow the Sun. Available on 11/29/2013.

Malthusian – MMXIII | Invictus Productions | Death metal
Absolutely unhinged death metal from Ireland. A demo truly worth the dollars.

Noothgrush / CoffinsNoothgrush / Coffins | Southern Lord Recordings | Sludge, doom, death metal
The second studio transmission from the reformed Noothgrush is another split, this time with Japan’s crawling Coffins. Dino Sommese (Asunder, Dystopia) is now screaming for Oakland’s sludgsters.

Rot In Hell / PsywarfareSplit | Magic Bullet Records | Hardcore, noise
Rot in Hell‘s punk rumble offsets Dwid’s (Integrity) harsh noise assault.

Shadow Host – Lunacy Divine | Sublimity Records | Power metal
Celebrating their 20th anniversary with their second EP of the year, this Russian trad beast offers a heavier alternative to Euro power metal frills. Part of a certain scribe’s Puppet Masters-esque plan to turn IO into straight power metal/AOR coverage in 2014. Prepare.

Voidhanger – Working Class Misanthropy | Pagan Records | Black metal, thrash
Infernal War and MasseMord members steamroll through blackened thrash with a touch of n’ roll.
