New Releases

KreatorHate über alles | Nuclear Blast | Thrash Metal | Germany

Kreator’s latest album is pretty good, but–as I feel like applies to every long-running thrash band still releasing an album every few years–it’s hard to really try and hold this one up against their insane classics. That said, the band’s aggression and catchy songwriting are still there four decades later, which is fucking cool.

DeathwhiteGrey Everlasting | Season of Mist | Melodic Doom + Gothic Metal | United States (Pittsburgh, PA)

Deathwhite pens a tragic epic of colossal proportions here, melding moody doom with extreme metal in service of an all-enveloping fog of despair.

Tomb MoldAperture of Body | Independent | Death Metal + Ambient | Canada (Toronto, ON)

Surprise! Tomb Mold dropped this self-recorded three-track EP on Friday, with an ambient intro and two death metal tracks following.

YatraBorn Into Chaos | Prosthetic Records | Blackened Sludge + Stoner + Doom + Death | United States

Yatra has kind of been on a tear recently – this is their fourth album since 2019. Unlike most bands with this release speed, however, Yatra’s sound is constantly evolving – the sludgy blackened death/doom here is a far cry from 2019’s Death Ritual, though not in the sense that they’ve left anything behind. Instead, the band’s aggressive heavy music has picked up more and more nuance along the way–expect tendrils of righteous heavy metal here along with all the violence and bile the band has to offer.

Severe TortureFisting the Sockets | Season of Mist | Death Metal | Netherlands

From Kelley Simms’s premiere:

Severe Torture specializes in no holds barred, straight ahead, pummeling old-school style death metal similar to veteran bands such as Cannibal Corpse, Aborted and Suffocation. Their definitive sound encapsulates the early ’90s death metal era with brutality and energy, while also injecting a more modern approach as well. The tracks are laced with scorching riffs full of dynamics that are fast and energetic, often turning into a groove-laden rhythmic thrust with a touch of melody at the drop of a hat.

Sunrise Patriot MotionBlack Fellflower Stream | Sibir Records | Black Metal + Gothic Rock | United States (Beacon, NY)

A wonderfully strange take on black metal meets goth rock, from members of Yellow Eyes, Bambara, and Pop 1280. The record brilliantly captures a certain acute, desperate insanity that aligns with its insane concept (a man attempting to dig a hole to strike oil).

BesiegedViolence Beyond All Reason | Unspeakable Axe Records | Death + Thrash Metal | Canada

From Ted Nubel’s full album premiere:

[Besieged’s] sophomore album, which carries on the naming conventions and momentum established on their debut Victims Beyond All Help, delivers incredibly energetic and chaotic extreme metal. It’s not uncommon for albums to feel like they bounce, groove, or are otherwise in motion, but Violence Beyond All Reason doesn’t bounce as much as it churns through hordes of innocent bystanders.

VoimatonProfane Vestige | Personal Records | Death + Doom Metal | United States (Chicago, IL)

On their long-awaited full-length debut, Voimaton dives down into seething sewers, spewing out particularly aggressive death-doom that’s heavy on bass and violence. Filth abounds, but straightforward malice seems to be the band’s highest priority–note the vengeful blasts that stir up the usually mid-paced miasma and the extremely aggrieved vocals throughout.

Note: I’m credited for photography on this release — these were live photos of the band from a few years back that I gave full license to the band to use, free of charge.

MonasteriumCold are the Graves | Nine Records | Epic Doom Metal | Poland

Epic doom done right: powerful vocals usher in a sense of creeping dread and mighty riffs douse that dread in majestic splendor.

WolfsbaneGenius | Independent | Hard Rock + Heavy Metal | United Kingdom

Blaze Bayley has been keeping super busy since his stint in Iron Maiden–Wolfsbane seems to basically be his for-fun hard rock project, and Genius is indeed fun, though it’s definitely pushing zero envelopes. There’s surely tinges of ‘boomer metal’ here, but not enough to distract from the jams.
