Sanguine Eagle — Storm Mysticism + Shores of Avarice | Profound Lore | Black Metal | United States (New York)
Some of the slickest black metal to grace my ears in a decent while: Sanguine Eagle’s double-release, Storm Mysticism and Shores of Avarice, comprises a wealth of talent across wavelengths both mesmerizingly intense and juxtapositionally subtle. There feels to be just about as much black metal as not on these two albums, with Sanguine Eagle taking plenty of time exercising ambient sounds and moody effects to establish a strong atmosphere and feeling. When the downs break, though, and blast beats, tremolo riffing, and pained screaming all coalesce into one solid wall of sound, Sanguine Eagle find their element effortlessly.

A Pregnant Light — Broken Play | Colloquial Sound Recordings | Black Metal | United States (Michigan)
Surprise, new A Pregnant Light. Broken Play landed today and is the solo outfit’s first full-length since 2015’s My Game Doesn’t Have a Name. Already, this new album is enchanting ears with its eight smooth, emotive, short-format songs — balancing between the harshness and aggression of blasting with the subtle, acoustic/clean-driven melodies which bookend the fury. Don’t forget, too, A Pregnant Light’s penchant for actual riffing (instead of the soupy dense wall of sound which obscures guitar details in other bands) shines here as well. Be sure to let this one play all the way through. And then again, and again, and again.

Brand of Sacrifice — God Hand | Unique Leader | Deathcore + Brutal Death Metal | Canada + United States (New York)
Outrageously heavy brutal death metal with plenty of deathcore to boot; a perfect fit for Unique Leader’s roster of bands who detune and destroy. If you do not like these particular subgenres, you will not like God Hand — for those whose wheelhouses welcome drop-z syncopation, pig-squeals, and thundering breakdowns, though, I’m pretty sure Brand of Sacrifice will satisfy. The band’s mechanical, robotic, almost industrial approach to wringing the pulp out of your brain is precisely the point.

Immortal Bird — Thrive on Neglect | 20 Buck Spin | Blackened Deathgrind | United States (Illinois)
From Thomas’s premiere of “Avolition”:
Capturing the more personal, introspective pain of black metal and perfectly combining it with the primal rage of their deathgrind roots, they have transmogrified seemingly oblique styles into a consummate and idiosyncratic mix for the modern dissident. Carefully electing to keep their compositions more organic than mechanical, they effortlessly maintain a human element within markedly inhuman music. Bearing a unique brand of angst, “Avolition” and Thrive on Neglect as a whole are a perfect synthesis of the group’s immediately distinct attitude, aesthetic, and message, and furthers their already bewitching sound to even greater heights.

Abbath — Outstrider | Season of Mist | Black Metal | Norway
The second full-length record from the solo project of legendary Immortal vocalist Abbath, Outstrider is eight tracks of straightforward yet infectiously compelling black metal in the traditional second-wave style (including a cover of the Bathory classic “Pace Till Death”). What the record lacks in experimentation, it makes up for in incredibly effective songwriting, grisly yet well-rounded production, and of course Abbath’s gloriously frostbitten pipes, which bafflingly seem to improve as he continues to age. Oustrider is an ideal record for those seeking a polished version of the old school Scandinavian sound that many modern black metal groups have since abandoned.

Jute Gyte — Birefringence | Experimental Black Metal + Noise | United States (Missouri)
Jarring. Nightmarish. Freakishly dissonant. These descriptors only vaguely echo the terror and catharsis of Birefringence, the latest full-length from one-man experimental black metal and noise/ambient project Jute Gyte. Over 70 minutes of pure aural cataclysm ranging from dark ambient noise to wild atmospheric assaults of mind-bendingly labyrinthine blast beats and tremolo guitars — Birefringence could very well stand as the hyper-prolific outfit’s most aggressive and well-rounded album to date.
