Upcoming Releases

DestructionDiabolical | Napalm Records | Thrash Metal | Germany

With longstanding bassist/vocalist Schmier at the helm, this relatively new lineup (who also played on Born to Perish) continues the band’s reign of terror: aggressive, bizarre thrash metal full of melodic delights and razor-sharp riffs.

Mors Principium EstLiberate the Unborn Humanity | AFM Records | Melodic Death Metal | Finland

The oddly spotless production might initially be a turn-off, but stick around and Mors Principium Est is likely to win you over with how well their approach to melodic death metal lands. Though it’s decidedly modern and happily immerses itself in some of the genre’s tropes, they’re pulled off with an ear towards catchy songwriting, not just fishing for nostalgia. At the same time, there’s enough vicious death metal here to push past that weird “power metal with death metal vocals” ditch that a lot of modern melodeath flounders in.

OceansnowVivienne | Avantgarde Music | Black Metal + Ambient | United States

From Jon Rosenthal’s full album premiere:

Beyond being a rarity in black metal (Velvet Cacoon worship is few and far between compared to in the 2000s and 2010s) and a tribute all its own, Oceansnow’s Vivienne should also be looked upon as its own work. Woozy and decadent, the album’s sumptuous, syrupy atmospheres recall tales of dextromethorphan trips and predilections for scent as atmosphere over sound.

Lux IncertaDark Odyssey | Independent | Gothic + Doom Metal | France

The moody interplay between guitars and vocals here is just sublime, with some grisly death-doom moments to add grit between the really doomy and dramatically gothic bits.

Terzij de HordeIn One of These, I Am Your Enemy | ConSouling Sounds | Post-Black Metal | Netherlands

Beguiling in concept and sound, Terzij de Horde’s second full-length takes listeners on a harrowing walk through blazing landscapes—fierce and engrossing black metal. Stay tuned for more on this one this week!

Tome of the UnreplenishedEarthbound | Avantgarde Music | Atmospheric Black Metal + Noise + Power Electronics | Cyprus

From Brandon Nurick’s full album premiere:

Earthbound is Tome of the Unreplenished’s first metal record since 2015’s Innerstanding, as well as the band’s first metal record with a complete line-up. This marks an important internal shift for the project, but much like the music he so carefully curates, Hermes could not have picked a more competent contingent of musicians to fill out his ranks. Joined by Aort, of post-blackened progheads < c o d e > as well as Alexandros and Tom Vallely, the duo behind Hellenic black metal institution Macabre Omen, Earthbound sees Tome of the Unreplenished at its most collaborative and perhaps unsurprisingly, its best.

DeathriteDelirium | Independent | Death Metal | Germany

A nasty little offering of black metal and death metal that strikes with the raucous energy of black’n’roll.

–Ted Nubel

SkumstrikeDeadly Intrusions | Caligari Records | Black + Speed Metal + Punk | Canada (Montreal)

Not only are there no frills here, to suggest that there could have been is almost an affront to Skumstrike: their debut full-length Deadly Intrusions is an incredibly vicious riff assault that takes extremely delight in its uncompromising, inelegant delivery.
