Oud Zeer Abandon Me

"Abandon Me" Sets the Stage for Throwing Bricks' Gut-Wrenching Split With Ontaard

Why just be sad when one could be sad and loud? Drawing from the idea of old memories that may be painful but are best not forgotten, Utrecht bands Throwing Bricks and Ontaard's upcoming split titled Oud Zeer is a study in processing emotion through soul-cleansing volume. Listeners are in for a wide spectrum of trend-averse heaviness as well as agonizing frailty: Throwing Bricks delivers an erratic mixture of post-hardcore and post-metal that's both brooding and furious, while Ontaard finds a balance between ominous softness and a landslide of blackened riffing.

Today we're premiering "Abandon Me" from Throwing Bricks' half of the split, which features Kim Hoorweg of Vulva on backing vocals. Hoorweg adds a smoky, ethereal layer that's especially cutting in the quieter moments of reflection on the track between the huge, gasoline-drenched riffs that crisscross it.

We've previously published a great scene dive about how Utrecht is a microcosm of an evolving metal scene, and this split is evidence of exactly that -- beyond bringing in guest contributors from Utrecht and other parts of the Netherlands, it was also recorded in a space now slated to be demolished. Oud Zeer, charged with sorrow and aiming to move beyond it, is a snapshot in time of two bands at the height of their powers and a crisp image of a music scene that continues to move forward, no matter what.

Throwing Bricks comments:

'Abandon Me’, is about losing yourself in a recurring depressive episode.

The minimalist nature of this doom-laden track amplifies the sense of loneliness and despair. Despite the fact that the song’s lyrics deal with the fear of asking for help, we’ve asked our sweet and talented friend Kim Hoorweg (of the band Vulva) for help to provide us with some beautiful backing vocals. Besides all gloomy bleakness, this is the product of friends finding joy in heavy music.
