Theft, and Wandering Around Art

. . .

Want to know where Danzig’s skull and Bathory’s goat head came from? Dennis Dread has a nice blog post about the origins of some of metal’s most iconic images. From the zombie on Live Undead to the flying horseman on In the Nightside Eclipse, Dread uncovers a trail of inspiration, homage, and straight-up theft. You can see Dread’s post here.

Over the years, I’ve built up a good listening vocabulary from which I can draw connections about music. Everything comes from something else. But I have a pretty deficient visual vocabulary – two semesters of art history wasn’t enough – and that would be useful in metal, which is as visual as it is musical. So it’s good to have people with deep visual vocabularies like Dread offering insight into that side of metal. There’s always something new to learn.
