The Simple Pleasure of Black Metal on Djevelkult's "I Kuldens Vold"

Going into the artistic and philosophical aspects which drive Djevelkult‘s “I Kuldens Vold” off their upcoming album Drep Alle Guder is stupid. That really isn’t the point of black metal like this, and the band’s quote below certainly bolsters that. Black metal. Winter. Old. Got it. To try and imbue this with anything deeper would simply ruin its simple, animalistic character. This is black metal, written in a gothic font with the caps lock on. It’s melodic and majestic, but it’s also fierce and cold, like looking at one of Norway’s many snow-capped mountains. Formed in 2009 by guitarist and vocalist Dødsherre Xarim, “I Kuldens Vold” dates back to this project’s roots and there is certainly a “youthful” and creative feel to it. Melding different ends of black metal’s sonic spectrum, the majestic and the fierce, Djevelkult’s latest single, which is streaming in full below, shows the band looking back to its early days, but also taking progression into consideration, as they really concentrate on the majestic in this particular song. Also, the high pitched screech at 3:40? Perfection.

“I Kuldens Vold” is our hymn to the grim white death of winter. It was composed in the 2000s so it feels great to hear the beast alive. Seidemann of 1349 also helped us out on the bass, making the song even greater.

Drep Alle Guder releases May 6th on Soulseller Records.
