The Encyclopedia Metallum claims that The House of Capricorn‘s genre is “stoner/doom metal”, but on “The Only Star in the Sky”, they’re a straight-up rock band. The clean and ample tones suit the song well, as it’s built around a sinuous and ominous groove. Over the groove we get ringing chords and a brooding vocal line, before a nice release midway through, and at the song’s end as well. You’ve heard songs from this playbook, but it’s a good blueprint, and The House of Capricorn execute it well here.

If the song’s title didn’t make it obvious, The House of Capricorn play for The Devil’s team, and it shows in the song’s tenor. It’s not crude blasphemy or rage, but measured and restrained fury, and maybe a little bit of sex mixed in. Akercocke used to feel this way, before they turned into Voices and got really freaky.

“The Only Star in the Sky” is from The House of Capricorn’s third album, Morning Star Rise. It comes out on
November 9 via Svart Records. Scroll down, click play, and get you some.
