TEETH Imagines "Dreamless Hieroglyphs" On New Single (Early Track Debut)

In just over two minutes, California death/doom quartet TEETH offer a powerful survey on the current state of creative, discomforting metal. Using chords the band likens to “pianos being thrown down stairs,” “Dreamless Hieroglyphs” from their upcoming Finite blasts and drones in an interesting and uniquely modern duality, something the band goes on to describe as “drastic contrast.”

On their newest album, TEETH take the longest route to traverse a short distance. The album itself is brief, but the twists and turns the band takes throughout (“doomblasts,” discordance, and bizarre pairings) makes it feel more like an adventure through a hellish landscape more than just some short death/doom album. This is powerful stuff, and an uncomfortable listen at that — TEETH’s vision of the inevitable and finite is vivid and horrifying.

From the band:

“Dreamless Hieroglyphs” is the oldest song on Finite, we’ve been playing it live for a while now. It was the first new song written after our previous record The Curse of Entropy. In a way it’s most like the material on that record in that it’s just bludgeoning, suffocating and concise. It translates live well because it just starts with these huge awful cluster chords, like pianos being thrown down stairs. Then Alex starts blasting like a maniac behind it all. Even though our music is inherently busy to say the least, this song in particular has moments of drastic contrast in terms of slow guitars over fast drums.

Lyrically, “Dreamless Hieroglyphs” communicates the destructive encumbrance of restlessness. What follows is a prompt and desperate hunger for tranquility. The stress caused by feeling buried alive beneath your own eyelids.
