Tardigrada - "Erschöpft" (Song Premiere)

cover

It’s been hinting at autumn out here in Chicago, which means it is the perfect time for washy, emotional, atmospheric black metal. Tardigrada gained marginal attention after the magnificent Widrstand demo in 2012, but they’ve taken a slower route toward completing their grand debut full-length statement. Emotionale Ödnis is a duality – icy and blistering but organic and soft. Kryptos and Threnos’s guitars, awash with an arsenal of effects, overflow like turbid water: cloudy and alien but smooth and fluid.

However dramatic this Swiss trio’s emotions come off, there is a certain adherence to the standard “detachment” found in atmospheric black metal, Tardigrada exudes emotion and yet it seems that the emotion is separate from them. Take the grand climax just before the 4 minute mark in “Erschöpft” (which you can listen to below), a gorgeous, ghostly lead guitar might distinguish itself from the fog, and yet there is still a barrier between what is conveyed, the performers, and the listeners. Tardigrada sculpts their emotive selves out of ephemera and steps back, marveling from yards away.

Tardigrada’s mammoth Emotionale Ödnis will be released by Fallen Empire Records and Eisenwald Tonschmiede Friday, October 28 (please note there are no pre-orders from Fallen Empire – keep your ear to the ground). Scroll below for an exclusive first listen of the beautifully icy “Erschöpft.”
