Syphilitic Lust - 2010 Cassette Demo

. . .

Syphilitic Lust sound like their name: nasty. I think of them in the same sentence as other purveyors of NYC filth: Villains, Pollution, Mutilation Rites. It turns out that black metal can be perfect for cities. Urbanization breeds misanthropy, and Syphilitic Lust drip with it:

I hide in my cave
No light I see
At night I creep
Through the slime and sleaze

These lines describe a good chunk of New York City’s citizens. (I know from personal experience.) This demo (downloadable on a pay-what-you-want basis – see below) sounds like it was recorded in a very specific space: a swelteringly hot (or piercingly cold) rehearsal room in industrial Brooklyn filled with beer-stained rugs and bad vibes. (In one song, you can even hear a phone ring.) First wave black metal tussles with battered midtempo thrash. A voice of spite slices through sheets of distortion.

Normally, I don’t champion antisocial art, but this is perfect as such. Sometimes it feels good to lie in the gutter, if only mentally. Tonight Syphilitic Lust play at the Bowery Electric alongside Villains, Witchaven, and Nocturnal. Gotham’s gutters may overflow again.
