Suffocate For Fuck Sake Lights a New Fire on "Fyra" (Full Album Stream)

There’s something so simple and effective about a good crescendo and climax in a song’s dynamics. Undoubtedly a hallmark of the post-metal genre, it’s bands like Suffocate for Fuck Sake who capitalize on the growing nature of their music and simply let it explode when tensions grow to a peak, sending their listeners into blissful soundscapes and emotional catharsis alike. On their newest album Fyra, these Swedes don’t take it upon themselves to reinvent the post-metal wheel, though this album in particular features a larger electronics presence, but rather hone their style. As such, the ends of their dynamic range are all the more dramatic — quieter parts veer on slowcore‘s lugubre, whereas their counterparts are almost deafening.

Stretched out beyond a compact disc’s 80-minute limitations, Fyra is a lengthy listen, but a comforting one. Suffocate for Fuck Sake’s sound is familiar enough to warrant such a lengthy listen, but without falling into post-metal’s “sameness” trappings — that is to say, the album’s use of dynamics is varied. Don’t venture into Fyra expecting “just another post-metal album,” rather, this is an exploration into emotional and dynamic extremes which recaptures the first time I heard the band over a decade ago.
