Yesterday afternoon Spawn of Possession announced on their Facebook page that they -- the long-tenured Swedish tech-death band -- were calling it quits.

It’s been five years since Spawn of Possession released Incurso, so this news is a bummer, but not really a shock. They’ve been prone to long delays between albums, only releasing three full-lengths and two EPs over their career -- perhaps this is because the music on those releases is some of the most rigorously composed in all of tech-death.

Among music theory dorks, Spawn of Possession earned a reputation for knowing their shit and not just slapping together a few minor seventh arpeggios. They played thoroughly contrapuntal music at lightspeed and helped set the standard for tech-death in the new millennium. They will be sorely missed, but luckily there’s still plenty to unpack from their discography. Check out some of it below.
