Sojourner's "Premonitions" and the Use of the Word "Epic"

For a while there, “epic” was an incredibly overused word. Anything could be epic, from a mountaintop to a sandwich. It took a lot of power from what was initially supposed to be, well, an “epic” word. Over time, though, “epic” fell out of use in favor of other, less… massive words, which is ultimately fine. However, “epic” hasn’t really fallen back into its proper use thanks to the years of abuse. Well, I’m here to tell you exactly one thing, Sojourner is epic. Listen to an exclusive stream of their upcoming album Premonitions below.

In the “dynamics” game, this international unit — featuring members from all over the globe — plays the trump card, generally performing at the top of the “mammoth” spectrum and occasionally crescendoing (which is actually a word) up beyond the highest peaks of over-the-top atmosphere. Compared to the cheap, often Casio-led “epic metal” to which Sojourner calls peers (Summoning excluded), Premonitions has the swagger of a big-budget fantasy film, utilizing real instruments and a truly talented cast of performers to make the point that, yes, this album is, in fact, epic. Not epic like a sandwich, or epic like that one time your friend chugged a beer, but epic in a classical way. Epic like a long, tumultuous story with a fulfilling ending, or watching the sun rise from a mountain summit. Through these efforts, Sojourner’s take on atmospheric metal (note that this album is markedly less black metal than their previous efforts) revitalizes and gives weight to the vast and, to use the word again, epic in metal.

Premonitions releases May 8th on Napalm Records
