Slomosa Blasts Through the Desert of Time on "Rice" (Early Track Stream)

Slomosa are no strangers to evoking the best of early stoner rock without resorting to lazy imitation -- see their self-titled debut for evidence of that -- but their new single "Rice" exhibits a fresh sense of soulfulness that goes hand-in-hand with their bouncy jams. Having signed to Stickman Records and played a whole bunch of gigs, the band is set to unveil a new album this year. In advance of that, they're sharing "Rice," which weaves sun-bleached motifs into a mix of loud and soft stoner rock that brings back fond memories of the genre in the early 2000s. I'll save the question of "did the increasing prominence of the internet ruin the atavistic pleasures of stoner rock" for some other time, but I do think that the Norwegian band offers a welcome return to the kind of music I was discovering while I still read forums and not just Reddit.

On "Rice," the band takes it easy while still stomping firmly on the gas: guitars create a quick-paced tempo that the drums purposely cut across, only falling into step for driving refrains to fully reinforce how slick the song's hook is. It's a bit of a shift for the band's style but still definitely in their wheelhouse, and combined with earlier single "Cabin Fever," promises that the band's next album won't stay in one place.

Regarding "Rice," guitarist and singer Ben Berdous comments:

Together with long-time producer Eirik Marinius, we turned Rice into a grungy spin-off of some classic desert rock influences of ours. It's an up-beat song with a different vocal approach than our previous up-beat songs, blended with riffs after riffs, becoming our tundra rock machinery. We find it to be a breath of fresh air and we’re glad to be playing on more strings as our songwriting continues to develop and mature. Rice is a song of divide and broken friendships, written as the ultimate sigh when push comes to shove.
