Selcouth - "Below Hope" (Song Premiere)

IVR076 SELCOUTH_Heart Is The Star Of Chaos

Proving there’s more to the Finnish scene that folk metal and funeral doom, Selcouth deliver inspired avant-metal in this new track “Below Hope”, taken from their upcoming album Heart is the Star of Chaos.

The band takes their name from a Middle English word meaning “strange and uncommon.” The name suits not only the group’s music, but also the multinational origins of their members. Selcouth’s ever-evolving cast boasts members from Finland, France, Spain, Russia and Argentina, many of whom are alumni from avant-metal heavy-hitters like Khanus, Smohalla and Stagnant Waters.

Upon listening, it’s tempting to pick out various influences like the tasting notes of some complex European ale. Right away, one gets maudlin of the Well, heavier Kayo Dot stuff, and big-time Mike Patton in the lead vocal. There’s a bit of Red for Fire-era Solefald as well. The operatic male and female backing vocals comes off a little like Magma, and the impressionistic guitar solo shows the group is hip to the more esoteric corners of jazz fusion. The band’s combination of metal fury and jazzy spontaneity sounds kindred to the grievously underrated (and now sadly defunct) Estradasphere.

Selcouth will release Heart is the Star of Chaos June 23rd on I, Voidhanger. Expand your palette and take a big sip with the track “Below Hope.”
