Say hallo to Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult

Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult are playing their first US shows ever.

The mini-mini-tour, comprised of three shows, starts tonight. (See dates below.)

I saw this German band play in Berlin three years ago. They opened for Koldbrann and Taake. It was perhaps the grimmest show I’ve ever attended in terms of atmosphere. The room had a dark energy that still makes me reconsider my areligious convictions. (To give an idea, Taake were the most “lighthearted” band that night.)

Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult have improved since then. Their last album, Saldorian Spell, has all sorts of barbs and hooks beneath its blastbeaten assault. It’s a dark gem worth seeking out.

But even three years ago Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult were a force. I remember the night vividly. It’s not every day that a woman with Cousin It hair dons corpsepaint and spikes, gurgles blood (whether fake or real), and fronts a band amid the full panoply of blasphemous paraphernalia – pentagram, inverted cross, animal skull. Usually those things are props. That night, they felt like they could be something more.

Nerd alert: Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult’s drummer also plays for cult favorite Pavor.

If you can go, it should be an interesting show.
