Rumours Gives Us a Glimpse of "That Glimmer of Freedom That People Call Death" (Early Track Stream)

I’ve always liked my rock’n’roll a little bit darker and gloomier, especially in classic bands that used this stylistic choice to veer closer to what would become heavy metal without exactly crossing over: keeping the rock element front-and-center sets up the perfect atmosphere for darker thoughts and darker music, ideal for late night listening. The German hard rock outfit Rumours‘ upcoming album The Lower We Sink, The Less We Care flirts with more metallic passages as it tells its rich, somewhat sardonic tales, but these moments are anchored by velveted hard rock that courses with electric energy and confidence. There’s no elaborate pretense or facade, though: this comes with a threat of danger, hinting at unforeseen violence even as the elaborate riffs dazzle and mystify. We’re premiering “That Glimmer of Freedom That People Call Death” now, the second single off the album.

At the core of the song lie groovy retro riffs, but they’re performed (and produced) with a sort of backwards-looking reverence and understanding that only careful appreciation of the source material could yield. There’s no shortage of bands that sound like the past, but Rumours is something else: their sound takes root in the darkness and delights of their inspirations and flecks those shadows with both blood and gold. We got a glimpse of this with their Neither Innocent Nor Wavering EP previously, and The Lower We Sink, The Less We Care elevates the band’s subtle might as well as their singularly persuasive approach to delivering it.

The Lower We Sink, The Less We Care releases May 6th via Lupercalia Records.
