Pyreship's Sharp-Toothed Post-Metal Casts Us Into a "Forest of Spears" (Early Track Stream)
Light is a Barrier feels almost impossibly vast: tinged with Americana flair and a sense of quiet despair, Houston-based Pyreship‘s second full-length record establishes a wide-open presence that evokes scenic vistas sprawling far out into the horizon. Their post-metal is certainly atmospheric, but crushing all the same. The band’s knack for catchy guitar hooks and balancing vocal segments with instrumental musings lays out a clear-cut path through the wilderness, and the songs leap from one perfectly-captured vignette to the next. Light is a Barrier‘s towering density is an impressive backdrop to a narrative that cuts close to the heart with no wasted effort. We’re premiering “Forest of Spears” today—check it out below.

Though the riffs are huge, what makes “Forest of Spears” hit as hard as it does is everything else around them: from the tom drum grooves that trade off with crashing cymbals to the scraping pick-slide-ish buildups that accompany hoarse vocals and accentuate tension, and even the eerie radio-like sample that closes the track off. Pyreship gild their bombastic centerpieces with surprising variety, artfully turning what could just be a speaker stress test into an exploration awash in emotion.
