Of Feather and Bone thumb

Premiere: Of Feather and Bone - Adorned in Decay EP

A friend of one of my friends likes to joke that band names are so irrelevant that new bands should just be assigned numbers. I haven’t met this individual in person, but he’d probably get a kick out of Of Feather and Bone, who’d probably be better suited with a string of impersonal digits than their chosen name. There is nothing downy or passive about this Denver band; Adorned in Decay is as unyielding as a tire iron.

As I age and hear more (and more, and more) metal records, my interest in albums that play to genre type diminishes. If you’re going to play in a well-established style, you’d better do so with perfect poise and ruthless efficiency. Of Feather and Bone have both.

They play a style of beefed-up, grindy hardcore that has its roots in ’90s bands like His Hero Is Gone, was perfected by Cursed during the ’00s, and has since been run damn near into the ground by countless Southern Lord and Deathwish bands. It is a style whose effectiveness is rooted in its abruptness and violence, which means that it gets tiresome quickly. Like Cop Problem’s powerful 2013 EP Buried Beneath White Noise, Adorned in Decay doesn’t give you time to get bored. Only two of its five tracks pass two minutes. It plays; you rage; it ends just as you break a sweat.

This single-minded efficiency is evident in the content of those quick-hitter songs too. Of Feather and Bone use familiar tactics, but they pay careful attention to the execution of those techniques. From the just-noisy-enough riffs to the taut performances to the punchy production, everything is in its right place here. I may have come to prefer Rube Goldbergian killing technology, but sometimes it doesn’t take much more than a simple, well-honed blade to slay me.

Adorned in Decay will be available on April 12 via Mind Melt. Stream it below. They will also be on tour with Centuries for much of the month; their dates are available below as well.
