Powerflo - 'Powerflo' (Album Premiere)

The importance of film soundtracks to metal history goes unmentioned most of the time. This is a studio album lover’s genre, and great compilations get a raw deal. The soundtrack to 1993’s ‘Judgment Night’, though, remains important to the genre’s history for taking the hip hop and hard rock fusion that Anthrax pioneered and giving it a full-length treatment. Read Trap Them front man Ryan McKenney’s tribute to the record for a much better analysis of what makes it so awesome.

Powerflo, a new band consisting of members of Cypress Hill and Biohazard, among others, consists of veterans from that project and exists basically to pick up where that soundtrack left off and carry the attitude of 1993 into the future.

I’m guessing most readers have already decided whether or not they’re going to listen to the full stream of Powerflo’s self-titled debut record already, but to those undecided let me say what prompted me to give the album a shot: Downset guitarist Roy Lozano. Downset, like Nothingface, never got the credit the band deserved. Their 2000 album Check Your People has aged remarkably well, as has the ‘Judgment Night’ Soundtrack. Powerflo lives up to the legacies set by those albums.

Powerflo is due out on June 23rd, via New Damage Records. Follow Powerflo on Facebook.
