Photos: Iron Maiden & Megadeth in Austin, Texas

. . .

Iron Maiden and Megadeth would have ripped the roof off of Austin, Texas’s new venue, the 360 Amphitheater, had there been a roof to rip off. Austin was one of only 7 lucky US cities the band played following a long string of worldwide dates starting in May. And, Iron Maiden was only the second act to play in this brand new open-air arena. After this, they head to South America, where those lucky headbangers will get to see them with Slayer and Ghost.

By all accounts so far, Iron Maiden is ruling the stage as if they never left. And the choice of bringing Megadeth along may be lost on some younger fans, but there’s history here…on Maiden’s tour in support of 1988’s Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (yes, that makes it a 25th anniversary of sorts), Iron Maiden chose to tour with Guns N’ Roses, who unsurprisingly flaked out on some of those dates, allowing Megadeth to replace them to promote their 1988 album So Far, So Good . . . So What!. Let’s hope all the metalheads there left their greasy marks all over this venue that will take another 25 years to wash off. And that by then the world will have forgotten all about Axl Rose.

We’ve got pics of Iron Maiden’s show at the 360 Amphitheater below, plus the set list and the full list of dates. Here’s an excerpt from Tim Griffin’s great writeup over at Brooklyn Vegan:

After the warm-up, Bruce greeted the audience, “How the hell are you tonight? It’s been a long time since I’ve been in Austin as I recall…” 25 years is indeed a long time, but it certainly hasn’t slowed the band down. Beyond being as audibly tight as ever, Iron Maiden couldn’t keep still for long. Bruce practically ran laps around the horseshoe riser that wrapped the stage, along with jumping and taking flight quite a bit (he is a pilot, so it fits). Steve, Dave, Janick and Adrian also made good use of the wide open stage set up, swapping positions throughout the night. The only person who stayed in place was Nicko, who was too busy beating the hell out of the drum kit.
