Pantera practice with Kerry King, 1989

Here’s footage of Pantera practicing with Kerry King in 1989 at Joe’s Garage in Ft. Worth, TX. At the beginning of the video, Phil Anselmo says, “We’re learning ‘South of Heaven’ for tomorrow.” It seems they’re rehearsing for a show in which King would make a cameo. In Part 1, they run through “South of Heaven” and “Raining Blood.” In Part 2, they jam on some metal classics, including freakin’ “Green Manalishi” by Judas Priest. Part 3 includes footage of what seems to be backstage at the show. The last link is to a practice session between pre-goatee, pre-Dimebag, Diamond Darrell and King.

Some thoughts:

  1. Cowboys from Hell hadn’t even come out yet. While Pantera must have been locally popular, seeing Kerry King onstage with them must have been unexpectedly awesome.
  2. Phil briefly exits the jam to learn the lyrics to “South of Heaven.” I wonder what Kerry thought as he looked over and saw Phil reading the lyrics off a piece of paper.
  3. Rex Brown is a bad-ass bassist.
  4. Thank goodness the cameraman took closeups of the guitar players. Kerry’s fret hand posture is instantly recognizable. Dimebag’s shredding is amazingly clean and fluent.
  5. Shorts that end above the knees are so ’80s.
