On Grey Aura and Being Weird

single1 demo2

Feeling weird is pretty alright. Not different, mind you: weird. Standing out in an intentional way and knowing full-well that there is nothing tying your behavior to the rest of the world. Dutch trio Grey Aura certainly knows the merits of the strange. Having entered the world with a dual-disc black metal audio drama (complete with professional voice acting), it is obvious — Grey Aura has no interest in being your run of the mill black metal band.

Returning after a short-run demo cassette on the prolific The Throat label, 2: De bezwijkende deugd (eng. The Collapsing Virtue), there is no sign of slowing down or curbing creativity, though their blackened edge certainly rears its mighty head. Listen to an exclusive stream of “De onnoemelijke verleidelijkheid van de bezwijkende deugd” (eng. “The untold temptation of the collapsing virtue”) below.

Though opening as an aggressive, undeniably black metal piece, this particular song doesn’t stay there for long. Meandering from a chaotic blast into progressive obscurity, a droning passage slowly morphs into what can be described as the only black metal Samba to ever exist. This kind of music is playful — masking its seriousness with a spastic, near schizophrenic character. Though retaining a black metal identity, Grey Aura’s extracurricular outside genre activity is what makes the band interesting. Rather, it makes the band weird, and that is meant to be expressed in the most earnest, kind way possible. It’s this weirdness which breaks the mould and makes bands like this trio singular.

2: De bezwijkende deugd will be released with the band’s first demo 1: Gelige, traumatische zielsverrukking in 2019 on cassette by Tartarus Records. Follow Grey Aura on Bandcamp.
