Omega Infinity Launch a Black Metal Rocketship to "Saturn"

Sometimes space-themed black metal is subtle, relegating cosmicism to gentle vibrations in atmospherics or even only to the lyrical content. Other times, space black metal is as evident as space itself: just look up, and there’s literally no ceiling, only infinite distance and the concomitant infinite questions about our place in it. Omega Infinity is explicit space black metal — the project of Todtgelichter mastermind Tentakel P. who contracted Xen of Ne Obliviscaris for vocal duties — and their upcoming debut release Solar Spectre is basically a rocket ship for your mind. We’ve got an astral new song “Saturn” streaming below before the album’s release later this month.

The main rub of Omega Infinity is the project’s penchant for an unyielding onslaught of mechanical, almost robotic riffage, of course with the howls and cries of Xen layered over top. The result is not a programmatic listen; instead, Tentakel P.’s songwriting bleeds through the unified assault of the overall sound to offer interesting dynamics (which unfurl over the album’s entirety and not necessarily any one or two songs). “Saturn” feels, well, Saturnal, equal parts mystery and beauty, unreachable yet evident all the same — this theme is spread across Solar Spectre, giving each celestial landmark (i.e. song title) its own intrigue.

Omega Infinity and other space black metal bands really showcase what black metal as a genre can achieve in terms of atmospherics. Perhaps nothing is as “atmospheric” as space itself (despite its lack of atmosphere, ha) — in other words, there’s no greater expanse. No bigger room for our minds to fill. With Solar Spectre, this project aims to bridge that gap and give our heads enough content to imagine outer space on so many — sometimes terrifying — levels.
