Novembers Doom - 'Hamartia' (Album Premiere)

Chicago’s Novembers Doom never get the credit they deserve. In 1989, the band formed on the ground floor of the gothic death-doom scene, albeit a whole continent away from Northern Europe where that sound became more prominent. Credit where credit is due, though, founder and vocalist Paul Kuhr never let that stop him. In the past 28 years, he and his miserable miscreants have crafted a consistent discography, folding melodic death metal and progressive rock into the band’s sound without falling prey to any of the cheesy excess that can come with those musical idioms.

The band’s tenth full-length, Hamartia, plays to their strengths. Producer Chris Djuricic keeps the guitars hot and crunchy, the same way he does for Jungle Rot. Dan Swano mixes the album with great clarity, and even lends his pipes to the closing track. Best, Kuhr keeps his vocals straightforward and emotive, while Larry Roberts (guitars) and Vito Marchese (guitars) put melody at the center of their aesthetic without beating the listener over the head with it. Songs like “Waves in the Red Cloth” and especially “Plague Bird” showcase Novembers Doom at their best.

Kuhr had this to say.

“It’s always a challenge for a band to push them selves with each album they write and record, and after almost 28 years and 10 albums, that becomes more difficult to achieve. We always set out to write a better album, each time. At the end of the process, we have to be proud of the results, first and foremost, and we know in our own minds if we achieved our goal or not. With Hamartia, I believe we did. The overall sound and flow of this record is cohesive, and solid. I don’t believe there’s been a finished Novembers Doom album I have believed in more than Hamartia. I hope everyone agrees, and enjoys what we have created!”
