Nova Collective, Feat. Members of BTBAM, Cynic, Release "Dancing Machines"

When Dan Briggs joined Between the Buried and Me for 2005’s Alaska his bass playing helped push the band from being a more technical than average metalcore group into being a full blown prog act. It’s no surprise then that Briggs’ work outside of BTBAM has also leaned further into progressive rock than any of his other bandmates. Take Nova Collective, a new supergroup led by Briggs along with former and current members of Haken and Matt Lynch of Trioscapes. If you thought that the last few Between the Buried and Me records were too deep into the prog zone, you’ll want to turn back now. Nova Collective’s first single “Dancing Machines” is a doozy, nearly 10 minutes of intricate instrumentation with nary a hook or common meter to be found. The song isn’t as heavy as Between the Buried and Me, or even Haken. Think of it as an extended bridge taken from the pond of a normal length prog song and allowed to grow to massive proportions in a new lake. I would warn you of particular elements of the piece that might come across as “a bit much”, but to be honest the whole point of music like this is to have “a lot much”. “Dancing Machines” never stops moving and only loops back at the very end to bring back a tremolo lead that you might have missed the first time around. Heady stuff.
