Netherlands - "Dots" (Video Premiere)

I don’t get to write this very often: I’ve never heard a band quite like Netherlands. The New York noise trio bears some resemblance to Melvins, which makes sense since guitarist and vocalist Timo Ellis has collaborated with King Buzzo and crew before. His noisy power trio uses a dedicated synthesized bass instead of the stringed variety, though. Things only get stranger from there: Ellis has a light, relatively high-pitched voice reminiscent at times of ’70s glam rock or early-’00s posthardcore, except his hooks bear some resemblance to freaky funk and soul singers like George Clinton.

That potpourri of ingredients makes their new album Audubon a thrilling if not entirely cohesive listen. Not all of those ingredients are present on their song “Dots,” one of the more unhinged tracks on Audubon, but the song should serve as a useful primer to the genuine weirdness of Netherlands. That weirdness, by the way, shows up in spades on the animated music video for “Dots,” which seems to harken back to the work of the Brothers Quay.
