Netherbird Summons the "Void Dancer" On New Single (New Track Debut)

The term “melodic black metal” has become a bit of a throwaway term, with bands aside from the classics, which don’t need to be named here, getting written off as a weaker form of their parent genre. I won’t lie, I felt that way for a long time, too, but there’s something about worshipping at the altar of melody which makes bands like Netherbird so special. On their new single “Void Dancer” from upcoming album Arete, Netherbird slows things down and really lets their grasp of melody and harmony shine, crafting larger than life atmospheres and crafting a character all their own, separate from the genre-notable albums which precede them.

Of course, this is also an opportunity for Netherbird’s evil character to truly radiate, as well, and when the blast beats kick in around halfway through the song, the quality is obvious. On “Void Dancer,” Netherbird is more than their influences, and more than the “melodic” tag — these Swedes tread a familiar path, but take enough detours to craft a powerful departure. Listen to “Void Dancer” ahead of Arete‘s July 30th release below.

From the artist:

“Void Dancer” is a song about how the passion that drives us to pursue our craft and our art also is a double edged sword that ultimately also can end up destroying us. Time is a patient foe and the downward slope is subtle. Most of us can proudly endure the horrible costs of creativity, but only for as long as we still lust for the very art we create. If we lose that, we truly have lost everything.

Arete releases July 30th on Eisenwald.
