Mystery Dudes - Exit through the Wormhole

I hold a possibly controversial opinion: consistency is overrated in heavy metal. Whether it’s an off-the-wall B-side track, guest vocalists, or a complete stylistic shift, any record over 25 minutes long needs to have something up its sleeve that breaks the mold. Listening to an album for the first time and not being surprised or noticing something unusual is, frankly, boring. Judging by the amount of Metal Archives reviews I read where people whine about some track or another not striking their fancy and thus justifying a 56% score, this might be an uphill battle for me–fortunately, bands like Mystery Dudes help provide me ammunition to argue my case. Though they never stray from their sleazy, energetic approach to stoner rock, they inject it with various amounts of doom metal, desert rock, and straight-up punk to keep things fresh and weird. Their debut album Exit Through the Wormhole unapologetically explores a variety of subject matter ranging from the cosmic to the supernatural, changing up the finer details of their style to match the mood as well. It’s not disjointed or confusing—instead, these shifts and twists keep the high-energy jams fresh throughout. We’re streaming the whole trip below—join the Mystery Dudes as they venture through oddities of time and space below.

Sci-fi and horror are excellent bedfellows for doom and stoner rock, and Mystery Dudes get a little polyamorous on their debut record with tracks like “Ghost Train” and “Evil Witch” taking a spookier, doomier tonality to match their subject matter while “Nebula” is a far-out, reverb-heavy ballad with tinges of southern rock. Even more awaits within its eight tracks, but — to echo my previous point — I won’t spoil the surprises here. Suffice it to say that Mystery Dudes bring a head-nodding sense of groove throughout the record, with an innate knack for nailing just the right guitar tone to trigger all the best brain chemicals.

The band comments:

A spaced-out stoner punk odyssey through a variety of themes and soundscapes. Imagine a place with ghost trains, nebulas, evil blood and eyeballin’ witches. You would probably exit through the wormhole.

Exit Through the Wormhole releases June 24th via Electric Valley Records.
