Mosara - Only the Dead Know Our Secrets

Mosara Teach Us a Doomed Truth: "Only the Dead Know Our Secrets" (Early Album Stream)

Mosara are masters of doom metal atmosphere. While they’re no slouches in the riff-crafting department–doom metal being a riffs-first, atmosphere-second affair in most cases–their carefully-layered and somber sound positively entombs listeners, isolating them from the world and wrapping lumbering riffs in hazy mystery. On their second album Only the Dead Know Our Secrets, the Arizona band take their self-described ‘atavistic’ doom and twist it further into their own morose, hypnotic strain. The 33-minute album is best absorbed in a single setting, letting the grooves and textures scrub away consciousness — check out a full stream below.

Only the Dead Know Our Secrets sits in a comfortable pocket between being too simplistic or too overwrought. Each track brings an unpredictable, exciting element to the table, like the clanging clean guitar in “The Permanence of Isolation” or the spoken-word monologue that lurks underneath the second half of opener “Magissa.” At the same time, plodding heavy riffs remain a constant priority executed with disciplined gravity, anchoring things in the murky waters of doom metal. Mosara knows the value of patience, and while their sound is more expansive and progressive than their retro-focused viewpoint might suggest, there’s never any doubt as to their allegiance to all things slow and heavy.

Mixing clean, fuzzy, and downright criminal guitar tones into a heady brew and seasoning it further with harsh screamed vocals, Only the Dead Know Our Secrets is intoxicating. It calls back to an era when doom metal was first discovering exactly how far it could stray from heavy metal, experimenting with more extreme tones and crafting works that truly transported listeners. Only the Dead Know Our Secrets encapsulates listeners in a world that moves at exactly the speed Mosara wants it to, offering daunting vistas and plunging abysses that only grow more intriguing with each listen.

The band comments:

We’re beyond thrilled with the end result of Only The Dead Know Our Secrets. A couple of the songs were already finished by the time our debut self-titled album was released. When our current bassist joined Mosara, we improved upon those songs. The addition of Chris was invigorating, so it didn’t take too long for new material to emerge and start the pre-production and recording of “Only The Dead Know Our Secrets.”

At this point in time, we feel that this recording reflects Mosara’s true sound. Doom is still the root genre but we definitely started to explore our progressive side with this material. We are also stoked to be releasing on vinyl this time around, the new material comes to life with the warmth that only vinyl can provide. There is also a hidden track that can only be heard via the vinyl release and it’s entitled “Bunny of Doom.” The digital version of Only The Dead Know Our Secrets will be available on all streaming platforms and available for download on July 22nd.

Only the Dead Know Our Secrets releases July 22nd independently via Bandcamp.
