Moon Coven - Sun King

Moon Coven's Radiant Stoner Doom Uncoils: "Behold the Serpent" (Track Visualizer)

There is an unusual glint to Moon Coven‘s doom metal. Sure, the band laces burly riffs with psychedelic stoner mysticism, but beyond that, their upcoming album Sun King feels dizzyingly bright. It taps into a sunnier side of heavy metal while in no way sacrificing even a fraction of its fuzz-adorned decibels. As you’ll hear on “Behold the Serpent,” which we’ve got for you below, Moon Coven has no problem crushing bones beneath the weight of its glimmering, white-hot stoner metal.

So, no, it’s not a joyous song (“all hope decease,” sings vocalist David Regn Leban), but here the band takes the bones of an ominous dirge and completely transforms it, shrouding everything in opalescent layers of fuzz and hazy intrigue. There’s no denying the powerhouse riffs that rumble and roil within the track’s boundaries, but the true heaviness comes from Moon Coven waging their own battle between darkness and light, enfolding both within their many-layered sound.

Sun King releases August 25th via Ripple Music. (UK Pre-Orders here).
