Molarbear - You Will Need Gods

"You Will Need Gods" To Weather Molarbear's Sludge Offensive (Early Album Stream)

Releasing an album in late December requires a fair amount of guts–and Molarbear certainly have that, or at least an equal measure of sheer insanity. The Belfast-based sludge-meets-damn-near-everything-loud band centers their music around inviting grooves, but they wrap this core in fuzzy layers of cynicism and eccentricity that keep listeners on their toes. On their sophomore album You Will Need Gods, the band’s packs in one foot-stomper after another while remaining intriguingly inconsistent in just how they get our limbs moving. It’s hard not to pay attention, honestly–the band’s catchy, incensed lyrics are delivered screamed, spat, and sung on top of barn-burning riffs and high-impact percussion. Stream the whole album here before it releases Friday.

Some tracks, like “Omega Supreme,” whose music video scored a regional nomination for ‘video of the year,’ show the band’s boundless energy channeled toward uninhibited rage, each chaotic stop/start leaving listeners reeling. Others, like the immediately following “No Reward” show a more reflective, experimental side where clean vocals and spacious soundscapes help give the band’s prickly side weight through contrast and open up the album’s horizons. Like a sunset behind a burning building, this expansion of perspective only makes Molarbear’s pissed-off sludge that much more fascinating. So, watch You Will Need Gods burn everything down – and take care when approaching.

You Will Need Gods releases December 23rd via Cursed Monk Records.
