Malleus' "Prophetess" Goes Old School (Early Track Debut)

“Old school” is a mindset, and Boston’s Malleus is definitely of black metal’s aged ethos. Playing something Encyclopaedia Metallum calls “black/speed metal,” I’m more inclined to simply call this four-piece “first wave black metal,” pure and simple. No doubt the sum of their influences, Malleus’ stomping, hateful metal pierces the listener with Anti-Christian rage and an arsenal of riff glory. On The Fires of Heaven, the band’s debut after a handful of EPs and singles dating back to 2016, Malleus fully entrenches themselves in this idea of “old school.” Be it their liberal use of D-beats, spooky guitar solos, and a concentration on simplicity over flair, it is obvious that Malleus have cut their teeth on the classics, if probably a handful of obscure NWOBHM 7″s, as well, but it isn’t Malleus’ emulation which makes them special, rather it’s the passion in which they present these ideas. Anyone (well, almost anyone) can make first wave black metal, but Malleus are convincingly pissed and rearing to pounce on the unsuspecting listener. It isn’t about being a first wave band, per se, but if you’re going to take the plunge, go all the way like Malleus does. Listen to an exclusive debut of “Prophetess” below.

The Fires of Heaven releases January 27th, 2023, via Armageddon Label.
