Back to the deep lands II

Magister Templi - "Horus the Avenger"

Before we begin talking about Into Duat, the upcoming sophomore LP by Norway’s Magister Templi, take a look at that album art. It’s called “Back to the Deep Lands II,” and it’s an acrylic oil piece by Germany’s by Stefan Bleyl. It might be my favorite cover piece of 2015. I’ve found myself doodling it on Post-it notes at my day job.

Not only is the coloring remarkable, but the piece gives the sense of passing into another world, another place and time, which is exactly what Magister Templi try to do with their music. Mostly, though, they just rock.

Magister Templi’s lyrics on Into Duat focus on Egyptian mythology (sort of like that Nile album from yesterday. I’m sensing a pattern!), but their chorus-driven style is more reminiscent of their Swedish brethren Grand Magus. Frontman Abraxas d’Ruckus (seriously) uses more vibrato than many contemporary singers I hear, which lends his voice a bit of character. you’ll find him easy to pick out after one listen of their new song, “Horus the Avenger.”

Into Duat will be released on September 18 via Cruz Del Sur Music. Follow Magister Templi on Facebook here.
