Lucifericon - The Warlock of Da'ath

Lucifericon Summon the Old Ways of Death with "The Warlock of Da'ath"

Whenever I see something labeled as “death metal” followed by the name “Invictus Records,” I generally have a good idea that, before hitting play, I’m going to be immersed in the genuine old school underground feeling without the plastic trappings of journalist-created tags like “OSDM” and whatever other bullshit we’re using to describe shit these days. I can’t say I didn’t have a positive bias going into Lucifericon‘s second full length, The Warlock of Da’ath, but I will tell you, with great certainty, that my expectations were more than just met, rather they were knelt down and executed.

In a less romantic way than outlined above I’ll just say that this album simply fucking rips and might be the best new death metal record I’ve heard not just in 2022, but in many years.

Lucifericon

Formed in the Netherlands sometime in 2009, Lucifericon is very obviously death metal made by fucking maniacs, the kind of band that has more songs than shirt designs which makes Lucifiericon something of a unicorn in contemporary death metal. My initial impression of the record instantly brought to mind Altars of Madness due to the whirlwind of razor sharp riffs, but repeated listens peels back the layers, exposing the malevolence of black metal and the misery of doom. This is a complex record, as sophisticated as it is cruel, with plenty of hooks without angling to some kind of passe’ guitar hero nonsense.

As of last week, you can get the first public taste of The Warlock of Da’ath: the second track “Qliphotic Trance,” a hair over 3 minutes of intense and triumphant death metal, a good first glimpse into this monolithic record.

The Warlock of Da’ath is eight tracks of constantly evolving menace that manages to keep you interested and eventually invested in every flowing minute. It manages to follow the roadmap of the 90s without seeming a parody while simultaneously feeling fresh and unheard. This is simply a fucking great record, continuing the Invictus legacy of releasing hammers.

The Warlock of Da’ath will be released on CD/Vinyl with the CD coming first around the 25th of November via Invictus Productions.
