Kluizenaer Wield Surreal Intensity on "Verewigung" (Early Track Stream)

Atmosphere is all about spatial balance (ha ha). It’s not about how much positive space versus negative space a band implements so much as it is a textural quality. The difficulty in creating an atmosphere is that it is felt more easily than it is defined. Imagine describing a steak’s mouthfeel or Metroid Dread’s tight controls to a vegan Amish child and you’ll understand this. Atmosphere can slither like a basilisk and weaponize its tone, but it’s better experienced firsthand. “Verewigung,” the new single from Kluizenaer’s upcoming album Ein Abbild Der Leere, summons an asphyxiating tenor best felt by oneself.

The 11-minute track opens Kluizenaer’s latest record with an incantation. The German black metal trio run through several spine-shivering segments of modulating frequencies. Their escapades threaten to derail the song’s cloaked atmosphere but in actuality they work to the track’s advantage. The ambient introduction gives way to lashing black metal stanzas wherein F.’s shrieks plummet into the mix. Kluizenaer don’t rest there, though: they assault, grovel, and ponder throughout the remainder of “Verewigung” while shackled to their conjured atmosphere. Kluizenaer adhere to their surroundings despite the song’s dynamic pieces. It’s a discomforting aura, as the group intended. It guides “Verewigung” to its conclusion and, spoiler, you’re going to want to hear what it leads to on Ein Abbild Der Leere when the album releases on February 18.

Ein Abbild Der Leere will release February 18th via Breathe Sun Bone Blood and Wolves of Hades.
