Josiah We Lay On Cold Stone

Josiah Channels Bluesy Proto-Metal On "Saltwater" (Video Premiere)

Josiah are a trend-immune entity. Formed back around the turn of the century, the UK-based rock group sets their sights on a very particular era of music for inspiration: the heavily blues-influenced strain of proto-metal that cropped up just before ‘proper’ metal came into existence and continued to grow into its own unique sound. This is a timeless sound, even if it’s influenced by an era where music was heavily in flux, and capturing what made this period special is no easy task. Drawing from a combination of early, unabashed heaviness and creative energy, the band’s sound taps into a jubilant sense of groove that isn’t going stale anytime soon. Today, we’re premiering a video for a new track from We Lay on Cold Stone, the band’s first new album in 13 years—watch/listen to “Saltwater” now.

As “Saltwater” builds towards its first chorus, punchy tom drums and soulful vocals drive home Josiah’s uncanny knack for instilling head-nodding grooves with hypnotic allure. Though the song maintains this bluesy swagger throughout, some surprisingly heavy moments await, like an eerie build-up to the final refrain. It hints at a darker core to We Lay on Cold Stone that is felt, not so much heard: every glimmer of discontent adds to the record’s authenticity.

We Lay on Cold Stone releases July 15th via Blues Funeral Recordings.
