The language of black metal has slowly evolved into more subtle dialects, but the long-standing Israthoum prefers a more direct route. However obscured and atmospheric their approach may be, these Dutch masters possess (and are, in turn, possessed by) a clear devotion to darkness and an undeviating, uncompromising momentum. Through sharp melodic motifs and sinister harmonic barrage, Israthoum’s primal, rich sound follows their clearly defined footsteps back to their formative years as Grendel in the early 90s. Israthoum’s performance contains the darkness of blackstrap molasses, but without any of the weight.
