Isis: new song, new record

Isis have posted a track, “20 Minutes / 40 Years,” from their new record, Wavering Radiant, out May 5th on Ipecac. It’s both interesting and not. The intro is the best part, with nocturnal atmospherics and indefinite tonality. It reminds me of ’80s action movies, in the non-action parts. As for the song’s body – well, it’s Isis. They’ve written the same song for a while now. It’s a good one, oft-imitated by lesser bands. But it’s not half as avant-garde as Isis, or others, claim. In fact, it’s rather friendly. At high volume live, it’s like a gentle bath. That’s Isis’ appeal – inclusive vibe, exclusive packaging. I prefer more challenging sounds, but Isis are the best at what they do. Judging by this preview, that should continue.
