Ingrina's Post-Metal Bursts Into Focus on "Ice Flares" (Early Track Stream)

I try not to use bombastic terms like ‘force of nature’ very often, but that’s exactly what Ingrina is. They are post-metal made elemental: a two-drummer, three-guitar pillar of might capable of enormous gales and ominous stillness. The French band’s unusual configuration allows them to indulge in intricate expressions of nature’s power, whether that be full-bore intensity or quiet, pensive interludes, and their creative, seemingly innate command of dynamics turns it into striking primordial movement.

Today, we’re premiering a new track, “Ice Flares,” streaming below. The ten-minute odyssey tells a story of evolution, erosion, growth, and destruction, bringing the band’s full force to bear while distant vocals howl beneath it all. There’s a mysterious atmosphere here which aligns perfectly with the band’s previous works, though at points this new track feels more incendiary than what we’ve heard before. While post-metal can be a tool of optimism or pessimism, in Ingrina’s hands it’s an expression of change. I won’t claim to perfectly understand what this song is about, but one message is clear: nothing can stay the same forever.

‘Ice Flares’ tells a story of lives and phenomenons lost in a cyclical infinite amber, trapped in endless loops, suddenly discovering a possible future… Since the repeated submersions, the systematic abandonment faced with colonisations, the inevitable emergence of carceral civilisations, a time finally emerges towards the unknown, the indeterminate. From the deaths of water and minerals to an unpredictable fire. ‘Ice Flares’ draws on the allegories of Siste Lys and Etter Lys (one’s beginning is the other’s end), suggesting an exit through the flames.
