Immolation - "A Glorious Epoch" (video)

Immolation – “A Glorious Epoch” (official video)

. . .

According to metal-archives.com, Immolation’s Dawn of Possession turns 20 today. That debut established Immolation’s trademarks: tunneling low end, skewed high end, fractured solos, and Ross Dolan’s roar. But it’s a nascent work; songs move from riff to riff and time signature to time signature, often failing to establish a purchase. The raw ingredients are there, but they’re raw.

20 years later finds Immolation much more focused. Songs are heavier, more patient, less polysyllabic. “A Glorious Epoch” is a direct lament about war; “war metal” this is not. Doom is the mood. So the song’s video is simple and stark – the band against a black background, as images of war float by. The video does a good job of distilling Immolation’s visual poetry, highlighting each member more gracefully than stage lighting could ever do.

Finally Immolation have a video worthy of their music. It’s ironic, however, that a car company (Scion) would finance a video about humankind’s self-destruction. Maybe someday someone/something will pick through earth’s rubble, discover this document, and see that we knew what was coming.

“A GLORIOUS EPOCH”

Hear millions cry
The darkness falls
Echoing the past
Bleed the world dry

Our threatened kingdoms
The world is divided
Trample ourselves
While we claw for the prize

The schemes of men have failed us all
Strife with no end, our actions will betray us

Battles will rage
Violence will flow
Repeating the past
A tragic path once more

Making our mark while leaving our stain
Our legacy of arrogance will wither with the day

Oppression and fear
Our weapons of choice
Always playing God
It’s never enough
Our coveted conquests
At such a great cost
More suffering and loss
A glorious epoch
